On October 12 the Public Administration Academyof RA hosted Garo Hovsepyan, the president of “House of Armenian Culture” and the leader of the 13-th and 14-th Armenian communities in Marseille. By presenting the outstanding representative of the French-Armenian community, the President of the Public Administration Academy of RA stated, that during his long-lasting activity Mr Hovsepyan has greatly contributed to the development of Armenia- Diaspora relations and thanks to this is very reputable in the Diaspora. Mr Lokyan granted a diploma of honour to the presentable guest, highlighting the latter’s activities in relation to the maintenace of the Armenian culture in the Diaspora.
By expressing his gratitude for warm acceptance, Mr Garo Hovsepyan presented the Armenian Community and the public administration system in Marseille.
He particularly mentioned: “The French- Armenian Community of Marseille was formed in the 20-th of the 20-th century. The city has a population of about 850 thousand people, out of which the 80 thousand are Armenians, which means that every 10-th resident is Armenian. The community is very Armenian-like and has its definite inner structure, a number of charitable, cultural and sports unities”.
“Only two everyday Armenian schools function for the 80 thousand Armenians there, and only one of them is a secondary school, and the second one comprises nursery and elementary departments. The community has built a church in every district. Now there are 8 apostolic, one catholic and three evangelical churches in Marseille”.
Mr Hovsepyan also stated with regret that the previously functioning expatriate unities have ceased their activities, which gradually results in the loss of a number of national values, language being the most essential among them. Unfortunately, the 5-th generation of the Armenian community in Marseille does not speak Armenian well and it is really difficult to present Armenian cultural values to them in Armenian.
“But there is something that will help in this relation, it is the Armenian spirit, which is conditioned by the phenomenon of genocide that unites everyone”,- emphasized the guest.
In reference to local administration the Armenian Mayor of the city of Marseille spoke of the similarities and differences inherent in the above-stated sphere between Armenia and his city.
By the way, according to our previously obtained agreement, three of our students will witness it all during their upcoming practice in January in Marseille. And with Mr Hovsepyan’s help they will get acquainted with the functioning of different departments of the town hall of Marseille.
