“Writing is a gift which can and must be taught in elementary classes”: this is how Professor of the Practice of Governance Frank. V. Zerounyan, Director of Executive Education of Sol Price School of Public Policy, began his regular lecture for the staff of the Public Administration Academy of RA. The lecture was intitled “The requirements of preparation and presentation of scientific articles”.
After confessing that it is not taught even in the USA, Professor Zerounyan offered a range of rules for clear writing, which the authors of scientific articles should know about.
Though he spoke about English, and the examples were in English, too, but it didn’t reduce the interest of the participants. Especially, some rules and principles provided during the lecture may be applied in Armenian.
The Professor suggested the principle “The clearer the better”, and the scientific article should be written in a way which is understandable not only for the specialists, but the ordinary readers as well. Nevertheless, the community the article is written for should be taken into consideration.
To be clear and understandable, first of all, short sentences should be used: i.e. to express one idea in a separate sentence. Moreover, redundant words and expressions should be escaped, to choose simple, even everyday words for expressing ideas, not to overuse the synonyms, and to divide the test into paragraphs which express accomplished idea.
These are the terms which will make the text more attractive, and they will make the readers read it.
Of course the word is not about primitivism where the meaning of the text is lost. It should use clear language, but it should also maintain the main idea.
Frank Zerounyan touched upon the requirements of the scientific articles, presented the technical features of the design of the article, offered the capacities of the Internet, for example opportunities how to use the bank of synonyms which will enrich the language and make it more interesting.
